Ton Pentre produced a battling display in the Nathaniel Cars League Cup Round 3 but exited the competition after extra time as Cwmbran Celtic won 4–3 at Ynys Park.
Despite the defeat, Bulldogs manager Kevin Richards was pleased with the team’s efforts and is beginning to see results of the hard work that the squad has been doing in training.
Cwmbran Celtic took the lead in this match on 19 minutes from a well executed free kick.
Minutes later Ton Pentre were level when Josh Toomey cut into the box from the right before squaring a pass to Sam Small who made it 1-1.
The visitors were soon back in the lead as they got through the Ton Pentre defence. Goalkeeper Ryan Griffiths was able to make an initial save when one-on-one, but the ball was netted on the follow up.
Ton Pentre levelled again with 15 minutes of the match remaining as Charlie Loss scored a stunning effort from outside the box that made it 2-2 and took the match into extra-time.
With 100 minutes on the clock, and while the Bulldogs were in the ascendency, Cwmbran were handed some good fortune as a wayward pass went straight into the feet of an attacker who made it 3-2.
Immediately after, the Bulldogs lost possession following their kick off and Cwmbran struck to make it 4-2.
Ton Pentre didn’t give up though and gave themselves a chance of taking the game to penalities when Tom Randall struck late on. However, subsequent chances failed to find their way to the back of the net and Cwmbran Celtic progressed to Round 4.
Next up for the Bulldogs is another cup encounter, this time in the JD Welsh Cup. The Round 2 match against Panteg kicks off at 2:30pm on Saturday, 4 November at Ynys Park.
