Ton Pentre have reached the last 16 of the Nathaniel Cars League Cup following an extra-time victory over Trethomas Bluebirds at Ynys Park.
The Division Three outfit had sensed an upset was on the cards as the Bluebirds took a 62nd minute lead and can probably feel hard done by that they were not the team to progress to Round 3.
Bulldogs manager Lee Phillips made several changes to his starting XI from the team that was defeated against Monmouth Town in the previous match.
Andre Griffiths, Huw Bowtell and Adam Lewis were rested for the match against Undy Athletic on Saturday (22 August) with Kieren Bassett, Matthew Smith, Tom Randall and Sam Small all coming into the starting XI.
The Bulldogs always looked reasonably comfortable right up until the moment that they conceded, however, Trethomas were certainly the team that created the better goal scoring chances.
After the Bluebirds had taken that lead in the 62nd minute, Ton Pentre equalised through Sam Small who hit a lovely strike into the back of the net.
With the scores level at full-time, this League Cup match went into extra-time. Trethomas’ gameplan was to hold out for penalties.
That plan was very quickly scuppered as Josh Toomey headed in to make it 2-1 from Leon Jacka’s cross just two minutes into the additional period.
The Bulldogs held out and other than the odd scare from the Bluebirds, comfortably booked their place in the next round after the 120 minutes were complete.
The draw for Round 3 will take place on Monday, 11 September.
Ton Pentre’s next match is on Saturday, 28 August against Undy Athletic. The match kicks off at 2:30pm. The postcode for The Causeway is NP26 3EW.
