Ton Pentre completed their preparations for the 2017/18 Welsh League Division One season with a victory at Paulton Rovers in their final pre-season friendly match.
Paulton Rovers ply their trade in the Evo-Stik League South – West Division and they proved to be an excellent test for the Bulldogs ahead of next week’s match against Cwmbran Celtic (12 August) on the opening day of the season.
Ton Pentre were forced into soaking up some considerable early pressure from their hosts, however, once the Bulldogs settled, they were clinical when in front of goal.
A free kick outside the box presented Leon Jacka with an excellent opportunity to test Kieran Hodges in the Paulton goals. Jacka got plenty of power behind the ball and after lifting it up and over the wall, Hodges was unable to stop it from ending up in the back of his net.
The Bulldogs were looking solid in defence as Thomas Davies returned from injury and Josh Hardy produced his finest performance yet during the pre-season schedule. Between them and the superb goalkeeping skills of Ryan Griffiths, they kept efforts from Joe White, Omar Simpson and Dale Evans at bay.
Ton Pentre doubled their lead during the first-half with a lovely move that was started by Jacka before Huw Bowtell played a pass to Adam Lewis, who then proceeded to dribble the ball past two defenders in the box before slotting it into the back of the net for 2-0.
Paulton Rovers pulled a goal back in the second half as Joe Guest was on the end of a corner to get the ball past Griffiths.
Once again the Bulldogs had to guard against the pressure that Paulton were adding on, however, Ton Pentre looked more comfortable for the remainder of the second half and pressed forward more regularly and could have added to their scoreline.
This had been an excellent test for Ton Pentre and it leaves Bulldogs manager Lee Phillips with a selection headache and much to ponder ahead of the league opener at Cwmbran Celtic.
Ton Pentre go to Cwmbran Celtic on the opening day of the new Welsh League Division One season (12 August) with the match at Celtic Park kicking off at 2:30pm.
