Ton Pentre produced a fine performance at Taffs Well to complete the double over the Wellmen this season and ease any worries they may have about slipping into the Welsh League Division One relegation zone.
The Bulldogs beat Taffs Well 6-0 back in March and this was another high scoring affair with Ton Pentre taking the lead after 13 minutes when a corner kick was eventually headed over the line by Gavin Morris.
Ton Pentre made it 2-0 in the 33rd minute of play when some extremely hard work down the left by Liam Reed saw him turn provider for Sam Small, who hit the back of the net with ease. During the build-up to the goal, the match referee had played an excellent advantage after Reed had been fouled when on the attack. The referee’s decision to let the move play out resulted in the Bulldogs goal.
After taking a two-goal lead, Taffs Well immediately hit back when they were allowed a free header in the box from a corner.
Before the half was over however, the Bulldogs restored their two-goal lead when a quick throw-in on the right released Reed, who shot from outside the box. Taffs Well goalkeeper Wyn Walters got his hands to the ball but was unable to take enough pace out of the strike to prevent it from ending up in his net.
With just over an hour played, it got better for Ton Pentre following the award of a free kick several yards outside the box. Morris looked to whip the ball in and beat Walters with his free kick. It appeared as though Small got the faintest of touches on the ball with his head to direct it inside the post, making it 4-1.
After hitting the crossbar in the 79th minute, Taffs Well eventually scored a second goal in added time, with the match finishing 4-2 in Ton Pentre’s favour.
For the Bulldogs, the match was particularly pleasing as six youth team players were involved in the match day squad and all were given time on the pitch.
