A determined performance from Ton Pentre saw them comfortably defeat bottom of the table Risca United with goals from Liam Reed (2), Gavin Morris and Andre Griffiths.
If the Bulldogs had lost the match they would have been bottom of Welsh League Division One, however, their battling display ended a run of seven consecutive defeats as Liam Reed shone with an outstanding performance that earned him two goals. The three points also lifted the Rhondda club out of the relegation zone on goal difference.
Ton Pentre were dominant over a young Risca United team and with their confidence growing throughout, a goal was inevitable. Sam Small was involved in the build-up play that also saw Griffiths battle hard for the ball on the edge of the box to keep possession away from a Risca defender. As the Bulldogs midfielder slid the ball to Reed, the striker unleashed a powerful strike into the top corner of the goal.
However, there’s still a lot of work to do with this Ton Pentre team in order to iron out some of the mistakes that are being made across the pitch. When the Bulldogs lost possession high up the field, Risca were able to to launch a clinical counterattack and pulled themselves level in the 30th minute.
Ton Pentre were soon back in the lead when they were awarded a free kick outside the box. Liam Hutchinson hit a powerful effort directly at Risca goalkeeper Sam Hill, who was unable to hold onto the ball. Under challenges from opponent defenders, Gavin Morris bravely slid in to put the ball over the goal line to make it 2-1.
Before the break, the Bulldogs gave themselves a comfortable lead when Reed scored another fine goal to make it three in two games. The striker was now brimming with confidence.
Reed could quite easily have netted a hat-trick as he had several good opportunities in the second half but was denied by some decent Risca defending. However, the Bulldogs were not done yet and Griffiths pounced in the 75th minute to send the ball in off the left post to make the score 4-1.
