The Football Association of Wales and broadcast partner S4C, are pleased to announce that the live match in Round 3 of the JD Welsh Cup will be the game between Ton Pentre and Bangor City.
The match will be played at Ton Pentre’s Ynys Park stadium in the heart of the Rhondda Valleys on Sunday, 4 December 2016 with a 3.00pm kick off.
The clubs have not met since the 1996/97 season when Ton Pentre were members of the League of Wales and both sets of fans will be looking forward to this south versus north encounter as they are reunited in rivalry. The Citizens are currently third in the Welsh Premier League, whilst the Bulldogs are seventh in a very tight Nathaniel Cars Welsh League Division One.
The game will also see former teammates Lee Phillips and Andy Legg go head-to-head in the dugouts for the first time. Bulldogs manager Phillips was Legg’s captain during his successful tenure at the Reds helm, which saw the club lift the Welsh Premier League title and Welsh Cup.
Phillips said: “This is an incredible JD Welsh Cup tie. It’s certainly one of the standout fixtures of Round 3 and it will be fantastic to welcome Dafabet Welsh Premier League opposition to Ynys Park.
“Bangor have been an incredibly successful club over the years and they appear to be returning to their best under Andy Legg.
“We are sure that the people of the Rhondda will come along to support the Bulldogs as there’s a real buzz in the area around this match and even more so now with the news that it has been chosen by S4C and Sgorio for live coverage.”
The Citizens have fantastic pedigree in this competition, having won it eight times and being runner-up on 10 other occasions. Meanwhile, Ton Pentre have only reached the Welsh Cup Final on one previous occasion back in 1922 when they lost 2-0 to Cardiff City.
