Ton Pentre 2-0 Cwmbran Celtic l Welsh League Division One l Saturday, 10 September 2016 l Ynys Park

Ton Pentre returned to winning ways when top-of-the-table Cwmbran Celtic came to visit Ynys Park in Welsh League Division One as Sam Small and Leon Jacka scored to complete a fine performance.

The result was needed following disappointing results and performances against Haverfordwest County and Afan Lido in recent weeks.

Bulldogs manager Lee Phillips, changed formation for this game with Adam Lewis, Corey Shephard and Lewis Hitchcock all returning to the starting line-up.

After 8 minutes it was Cwmbran Celtic who had come the closest to breaking the deadlock when Chris Ham struck from the edge of the box. It was a well hit strike that was matched by an excellent save from Joe Mossaro in the Bulldogs goals.

Three minutes later Ton Pentre were in the lead when Leon Jacka linked well with Lewis Hitchock on the left before the latter sent a perfect cross into the box where Sam Small was on the end to head the ball past Cwmbran Celtic goalkeeper Thomas Chorley.

Small had two more chances to double the lead for Ton Pentre before half-time but on both occasions he was denied by Chorley. Following the latter chance, the Bulldogs were awarded a corner kick. As the ball was sent into the box, Thomas Davies jumped for a header whilst Chorley attempted to grab it. Chorley dropped the ball and it was bundled over the line but the referee had blown for a foul on the Cwmbran Celtic goalkeeper.

At the start of the second half the Bulldogs looked determined to increase their lead with Andre Griffiths first seeing his shot tipped over the bar before Adam Lewis played the ball into the box where Small turned to shoot. Once again, Chorley denied the striker.

The Bulldogs were desperately hoping that they wouldn’t be made to rue missed chances, and moments after Cwmbran Celtic should have equalised in the 69th minute, Corey Shephard played Jacka into the 18-yard box where he made it 2-0.

The 2-0 victory saw Cwmbran Celtic knocked off the top of the Division One table and the Bulldogs moved 9th in the table.

The Rhondda Bulldogs have launched its new Community Benefit Society (CBS) membership framework with an exciting range of membership options that will enable supporters and the wider community to own their community club.

The Ton Pentre AFC CBS General Manager, Rhys Williams outlined some of the thinking underpinning the membership model: “We believe there is something here for everyone, but the underlying principle is that all members over 16 will have one vote and all the members of the Club will own the club as a collective.

“The Club Board has created some exciting membership packages and I would encourage interested parties to review the suite of options on our web site.

“As part of our community development strategy, we are ensuring that membership is free to all Under 16s – these young people are the future of the club as players, supporters, volunteers or members or perhaps all of these at different times of their lives.”

Further information regarding the membership incentives behind the various categories of SQUAD MEMBER, STAR PLAYER, CLUB LEGEND, OVERSEAS and JUNIOR BULLDOG can be found here at the bottom of this page and by CLICKING HERE.

Club Chairman, Ceri Jones, encourages the community to get on board with the Bulldogs: “These are exciting times for the Rhondda Bulldogs and we have enjoyed a busy summer with the introduction of our new reserve team and the possibility of fielding a new girls team; and this is just the start of this new chapter for the Club.

“There is much more in the pipeline, so please take this unique opportunity to own your local club. The Bulldogs have an incredible reach with supporters and former players scattered far and wide and the membership model allows our friends old and new to connect with the club – we are committed to inclusivity and we extend a warm welcome to new members from all backgrounds that can help us shape the future of this great football club.“

Jones added: “Whilst there is a local feel to the club we very much want an outward looking approach that welcomes diversity and fresh thinking.”

A new membership portal in now available on the Ton Pentre AFC website to process membership applications and payments.
