Despite losing in Round 2 of the Nathaniel Car Sales League Cup in Taffs Well, the Bulldogs produced a decent performance and can take many positives from the match.
Ton Pentre produced good chances throughout the game and they moved the ball around the pitch in a positive manner, however, they will need to be more ruthless when in front of goal.
Taffs Well took the lead through good fortune when Adam Hawkins slipped in defence and lost possession to Nicky Fish who had a clear route through to goal where he shot past Joseph Massaro in the Bulldogs goals on 23 minutes.
Hawkins had been playing well and the Bulldogs defender nearly atoned for the previous error shortly after when pressure was applied to the Taffs Well defence from a corner kick. Hawkins jumped above everyone to head at goal but the ball went over the crossbar.
It got worse for Hawkins less than 30 seconds into the second half after he tangled with a Taffs Well attacker on the edge of the box. Not only was a dangerous free kick awarded to the Wellmen but a one man advantage too as Hawkins was sent off for denying a goalscoring opportunity. He will now miss Saturday’s (27 August) match against Haverfordwest County at Ynys Park.
From the free kick Taffs Well made it 2-0 when Joshua Evans found his way to the back of the net.
Despite playing the entire second half with 10 men, the Bulldogs still threatened and demonstrated good fitness levels, however, they were unable to score and will not be in the hat for Round 3 of the League Cup.
NEXT MATCH: The Bulldogs welcome Haverfordwest County to Ynys Park in Welsh League Division One on Saturday, 27 August. The match kicks off at 2.30pm.
