AFC Porth and Ton Pentre played out an entertaining 3-3 Rhondda Derby draw at Dinas Park today (1 November) in Welsh League Youth Division East.
The Bulldogs dominated most of the first half but their wastefulness in front of goal was punished when AFC Porth took a 32nd minute lead.
Three minutes later the Bulldogs replied with a goal of their own when some super build-up play allowed Jamie Coombes to sublimely dribble the ball into the box before striking it into the back of the net.
There was more to come in the first half as AFC Porth regained the lead in the 37th minute with an outstanding 25-yard strike that whizzed straight into the top left-hand corner of the goal. Bulldogs goalkeeper Liam Williams had absolutely no chance of making the save.
Ton Pentre maintained their work-rate and were rewarded with another equaliser moments before half-time after Tyler Rees delightfully chipped the ball over the Porth defence for Brandon Coombes to head over the committed goalkeeper and into the goal for 2-2.
The entertainment continued in the second half but there were no more goals until the 74th minute when some good fortune allowed AFC Porth to take the lead for a third time. However, the good fortune was the result of an error from a Ton Pentre free kick deep inside the Porth half of the pitch.
Rather than the ball being sent into the loaded box from a free kick several yards out, it was kicked inside to Rees with no marker. The ball was hit with too much strength, leaving it impossible for Rees to bring it under control and it sparked an AFC Porth counter-attack. As the Black Dragons advanced into the box, their striker unleashed a shot the appeared to draw a routine save from Williams, however, the ball slipped through the Bulldogs keeper’s hands and over the line for 3-2.
Nevertheless, Ton Pentre would not give in and less than a minute later the Bulldogs were level again as Jamie Coombes scored his second of the match with a shot from outside the box.
It was an enthralling Rhondda Derby encounter and neither team will be too disappointed to have drawn the match. The Bulldogs next youth match is on Sunday, 8 November away to Afan Lido in Round 2 of the FAW Youth Cup. The match kicks off at 2.00pm.
