Ton Pentre suffered defeat at the home of the League champions on Wednesday (19 August) evening as Caerau Ely showed their class with a fine second half performance. Their goals came from former Bulldog Lloyd Toghill and a brace from Jamal Roberts.
However, the turning point in the game was a 42nd minute penalty that was awarded against Ton Pentre after Liam Hutchinson was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box by the referee following a long thrown-in by Toghill.
Up to this point, the game had been very tight with the Bulldogs more than matching their hosts.
With nothing between the teams as the game neared half-time, it looked like the score was to be 0-0 until the penalty was given and scored.
Caerau Ely performed much better in the second half than they had in the first and after weathering a period of pressure from the Bulldogs, went on to comfortably win the match in the final 15 minutes.
On 75 minutes the home team made it 2-0 with a rocket shot from outside the box that Jarrad Howells found impossible to stop and some slack defensive play resulted in a third goal during the 82nd minute of play.
This was always going to be a tough game for the Bulldogs and it provided a good measure to show where Ton Pentre are in comparison to one of the best teams in Division One. The defeat will spur Ton Pentre on to their next match at Risca United on Saturday, 22 August, where the Bulldogs will look to get back to winning ways. Kick off at the Centre for Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach is at 2.30pm.
