Ton Pentre travelled to Haverfordwest County knowing that they were in for a tough match, as the Bluebirds are battling for promotion to the Corbett Sports Welsh Premier League and needed to win.
With Caerau Ely having already won the Nathaniel Cars Welsh League Division One, Haverfordwest need to finish second in order to be promoted. Their challengers are Cardiff Met University, who sit ahead of them on goal difference.
Caerau Ely were not in a position to apply for a Football Association of Wales domestic licence for promotion, whilst Haverfordwest and Cardiff Met achieved their licences earlier this month.
The final scoreline flattered Haverfordwest as all four of their goals came from Bulldogs mistakes in their own box.
Despite looking quite dangerous at times, it was Ton Pentre who fell behind after 25 minutes when Steffan Davies took full advantage of Ryan Wookey’s failure to command his area. As a corner kick was sent into the box, the ball bypassed the Bulldogs goalkeeper and following several bounces in the six-yard box, Davies pounced at the far post to make it 1-0.
Twelve minutes later it was 2-0 to the home team when a free kick saw Wookey come for the ball but failed to get his hands on it. This left Sam Roden with an easy chance to head the ball into the net.
A minute short of the hour mark, Haverfordwest made it 3-0 when they exerted pressure on the Ton Pentre defence from another corner kick. As the ball was hit through the Bulldogs wall, an alert Declan Carrol attached himself to the loose ball and fired past Wookey.
It got worse for the Bulldogs in the 69th minute when defender Mark Crutch was sent off after receiving a second yellow card.
Despite being 3-0 down and a man light, the Bulldogs appeared to be the more creative of the two teams and finally got themselves a deserved goal on 75 minutes.
A mazy run from Dan Richard saw his opponents stand off him in fear of giving away an advantageous free kick or penalty and when the striker squared the ball to Connor Berry in support, the Ton Pentre youth product finished well to make it 3-1.
Haverfordwest began to panic and the 10 men of Ton Pentre continued to plough forward and apply some considerable pressure on their opponents, however, the Bulldogs were dealt a sucker-punch in the 83rd minute when Staffan Williams made it 4-1 when his shot went straight through Wookey’s efforts to save the ball.
This defeat brought an end to Ton Pentre’s five match unbeaten run. The Bulldogs will look to overcome this setback on Wednesday, 29 April at Garden Village (Kick off: 7.30pm).
