Ton Pentre are fully aware that they now have to fight for survival in Division One of the Nathaniel Cars Welsh League, as this defeat against Monmouth Town, and results elsewhere, sunk the Bulldogs into the bottom three.
It’s not all doom and gloom however, as Ton Pentre have multiple games in hand on every team in the League but Bulldogs manager Lee Phillips’ preference would be to have the points already on the board.
Ton Pentre fell behind in this match after just 11 minutes, when from a Monmouth corner, Ben Evans was allowed a free header inside the box to put the ball through goalkeeper Ryan Wookey.
As the first half progressed, Ton Pentre looked dangerous at times and on the half hour mark, Lewis Hitchcock brought the ball forward before playing Andre Griffiths into the Monmouth box out on the right. Griffiths set-up Shane Davies for a strike but the Bulldogs midfielder saw his effort deflected wide by a defender.
Four minutes later Griffiths was provider again when he gave Hitchcock the opportunity to shoot. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, a deflection got the better of a strike once again and Hitchcock’s effort went over the bar.
Neither team really got a grasp on the game in the second half but with 15 minutes left on the clock, the Bulldogs really should have equalised when Leon Jacka attacked the byline and squared a ball for the players in support. With the ball completely eluding goalkeeper Matthew Johns, it appeared to be met by Hitchcock who struck his shot against the post.
Shortly after Ton Pentre then found themselves 2-0 down as Eliot Evans went unchallenged as he got on the end of a cross from the right to ensure that the Kingfishers picked up all three points.
The next match for the Bulldogs is on Friday, 27 March away to Penybont. The game kicks off at 7:30pm. Ton Pentre will then welcome Caerau Ely to Ynys Park on Tuesday, 31 March at 7:30pm.
