Ton Pentre Youth let a 2-0 half-time lead slip away in the second half of this Welsh League Youth Division East match against Monmouth Town after the young Bulldogs ran out of steam following a seven week football hiatus.
Ton Pentre Youth had not played a match since 1 February. Initially it didn’t show in this encounter as the Bulldogs took a 33rd minute lead when Josh Evans headed in from a corner kick.
It was 2-0 six minutes later when Tyler Rees and Daniel Kinsey were involved in the build-up play that allowed Connor Ray to find the back of the net.
Monmouth played much better in the second half and Ton Pentre’s lack of football began to show as the Kingfishers fought their way back to not only draw level but take a 3-2 lead.
In the 79th minute Ton Pentre looked set for a late flourish as a drifted Calum Emms free kick into the box was headed into the net by Connor Berry, however, Monmouth sneaked a free header in at the near post three minutes later to make it 4-3.
This was a disappointing defeat for Ton Pentre, however, there were positives that can be taken from the game the match fitness gained in this encounter following a lengthy layoff will be of benefit for the Bulldogs visit to Caldicot Town on Monday, 23 March at 7:15pm.
