Ton Pentre dominated the majority of the match against Afan Lido with an excellent display of football at Ynys Park. The Bulldogs fully deserved their win and Afan Lido were fortunate not to have conceded more than three goals.
For this game, Ton Pentre were without the services of Leon Young, who was serving a one match suspension, and goalkeeper Neil Collins was unavailable with youth team product Liam Williams coming in to deputise. The Bulldogs also welcomed Leon Jacka and James Dury into the squad following their transfers from Ton & Gelli Boys Club.
Ton Pentre took the lead after 15 minutes of the match when Adam Raymond’s cross into the box was headed into the back of the net by an Afan Lido defender. The own goal made it 1-0 to the Bulldogs.
An Adam Lewis cross also caused the Afan Lido defence problems later in the half when he found Leon Jacka at the far post. The midfielder powerfully shot across the goal but his effort went wide.
Before half time, the Bulldogs hit the post from a free kick and really should have been in a more comfortable position at the interval.
In the 57th minute Jaymie Wearn was set through on goal and looked likely to double Ton Pentre’s lead, however, the striker missed the target, much to Afan Lido’s relief.
Afan Lido were hoping to make Ton Pentre rue their missed chances and they nearly did just that in the 63rd minute. A well hit strike from 18-yards forced Williams into making an excellent save for the Bulldogs by diving low to his left in order to tip the ball around the post.
Chris Jones in attack for the Bulldogs was having a splendid game and his desire saw him get to the ball wide left at the Afan Lido goal line. He crossed to strike partner Wearn, who opened up space to shoot but once again his effort was directed wide.
Ton Pentre’s second goal finally came in the 83rd minute when Wearn showed exceptional drive and desire to get to the ball and run past the Afan Lido defenders. He made no mistake with his shot and fired into the net to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.
It was soon 3-0 when Wearn turned provider for Jacka, whose powerful strike rippled the net to round off an excellent afternoon for the Bulldogs at Ynys Park.
