Ton Pentre overcame a stern test from Caldicot Town in the Nathaniel Cars League Cup at Jubilee Way, where the Bulldogs could quite easily have been several goals behind by half-time. However, Ton Pentre took their goalscoring chances when presented with them and it was enough to take them through to Round Three.
In the previous round, Caldicot Town had defeated Haverfordwest County and so the Gwent outfit were confident of causing another upset.
Caldicot’s confidence seemed well founded as they enjoyed much possession in this match and created a plethora of goal scoring opportunities that should have seen them comfortably in the lead, however, Bulldogs goalkeeper Neil Collins, produced a string of superb saves to deny the Division Two club.
With a makeshift defence, the Bulldogs were caught out several times by the Caldicot attack with Collins protecting his goal through a series of one-on-one saves. Caldicot really should have scored with the chances that they had created.
Ton Pentre’s best chance of the first half occurred in the 17th minute when Ryan Jenkins and Dan Richards combined to allow Shane Davies an opportunity to shoot. The midfielder came close with his strike but the ball edged wide of the righthand post.
Caldicot created another good chance early in the second half when they went one-on-one with Collins once again. Despite looking odds on to score, Collins somehow produced another fantastic save to deny a goal.
Moments later the Bulldogs mustered an attack and when Davies linked with Richards, it allowed the latter to dribble his way into the box. After hitting the ball low across the face of the goal, a Caldicot defender was unable to get out of its way and gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead by scoring an own goal.
Caldicot however, soon equalised when a cross from the right was met with a header that rippled the back of the net. The home team certainly deserved to score the goal following the amount of attempts that they’d had throughout the match.
With 17 minutes of the game remaining, Richards made way for Andrew Hughes in attack and the fresh legs spurred the Bulldogs on to victory.
When Hughes chested the ball down for Andre Griffiths, the midfielder picked out an excellent pass to Jaymie Wearn, who scored to regain the lead the for the Bulldogs.
Ton Pentre’s progress in the League Cup was confirmed in added time when Davies broke the defence down to put Wearn through on goal. Showing great composure, Wearn confidently found the back of the net to make it 3-1.
Following the match, RadioTon caught up with Neil Collins and Jaymie Wearn for their reaction to the League Cup win:
