The only difference between Ton Pentre and Division One leaders Haverfordwest County was a 34th minute free kick that was glided into the top left-hand corner of the Bulldogs goal at Ynys Park.
There was a lot of neat football played in this match from both teams and when Ton Pentre went on the attack early in the first half, Andre Griffiths took a useful looking shot from the edge of the box. Craig Morris looked worried for a few moments in the Haverfordwest goal but the ball hit the side netting.
Later in the first half, Ryan Jenkins played a lovely through ball for Jaymie Wearn to enter the box. The Bulldogs striker got good leverage on the ball but his shot went over Morris’ crossbar.
Shortly after, Haverfordwest dribbled the ball towards the edge of the Ton Pentre box. The referee awarded a free kick after a visiting player was upended and Chris O’Sullivan drifted a wonderful strike into the net for an excellent goal.
Barely five minutes of the second half had been played when Haverfordwest threatened again and Thomas Davies was forced into clearing the ball off the line to deny the Bluebirds.
In the 54th minute, Davies saw red in an off the ball incident. After the Referee had waved away penalty calls from Haverfordwest, judging that the player had simulated, a small fracas ensued with players grabbing each others shirts. The Referee decided to send Davies off and a Haverfordwest’s player received a yellow card.
The Bulldogs reacted well to being a man down and demonstrated a good work ethic while Haverfordwest were keen to make their one man advantage count.
The Bluebirds nearly did this on the hour mark, when from a corner kick, Sam Roden headed over at the far post.
With ten minutes of the match remaining, Ton Pentre nearly came close to equalising from a free kick that was cleared off the line by Haverfordwest defender Dale Griffiths.
The West Wales outfit held out for what they dubbed a “magnificent result” that keeps them four points clear of Monmouth Town at the top of the table. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs lie in 10th position.
Ton Pentre have a bye in Round One of the Nathaniel Cars League Cup so they are without a fixture on Saturday, 18 October and with the home match against Cardiff Metropolitan University being postponed on Saturday, 25 October, the Bulldogs next game is on Saturday, 1 November at Briton Ferry Llansawel (KO 2:00pm).
