Ton Pentre Youth were left frustrated at Ynys Park in their Ivy Court Welsh League Youth Division East encounter with Caerleon Youth, after a last minute penalty went against the run of play to give the visitors victory.
The young Bulldogs dominated this match but despite playing some wonderful football the ball just wouldn’t fall right in the final third of the pitch.
Ton Pentre’s best chance in the first half was the result of some lovely play up the left with Callum Emms taking the ball forward before crossing to the back post where Tyler Rees met the ball. Rees connected but was unable to get enough power behind his shot and the Caerleon goalkeeper was able to make the save in the 21st minute.
Caerleon’s best, and only real chance of the match, came in the 35th minute when their number 10 took a shot from distance that appeared to be looping over Liam Williams in the Ton Pentre goals. The Bulldogs keeper reacted well to the strike by tipping the ball over his crossbar.
The young Bulldogs continued to dominate the match in the second half and on 54 minutes Emms ran the ball up the right and after cutting inside he shot across goal. The ball appeared to be bending into the net but unfortunately for the Bulldogs striker it scraped wide of the righthand post.
Following a 57th minute corner, Josh Evans regained possession out on the left after the Caerleon defence cleared the ball. Evans then laid the ball off for Tyler Rees to send a superb cross into the box that nobody was able to get on the end of.
With 71 minutes now having been played, Emms was involved again with a cross into the Caerleon box that found Rees. The Bulldogs captain volleyed a thunderous shot at goal but the ball hit the underside of the crossbar before bouncing down on the line and then away from goal.
The Bulldogs performance deserved a goal and they created another opportunity in the 83rd minute with Emms crossing once again for Rees. On this occasion, a well hit shot from Rees was tipped over the crossbar by the Caerleon goalkeeper.
A rare attack for Caerleon in the 90th minute saw the Bulldogs under pressure and a clumsy coming together in the box saw the young visitors awarded a penalty kick. Caerleon made no mistake from the spot to make it 1-0.
There was five minutes of added time in this match and the Bulldogs applied a lot of pressure on their opponents but despite creating several more chances, Ton Pentre were unable to find the back of the net.
It is hoped that this is just a minor setback for Ton Pentre Youth who travel to Risca United Youth on Sunday, 28th September 2014.
