An enthralling pre-season friendly match ended in a 4-4 draw between Ton Pentre and Ton & Gelli BC at Ynys Park.

Ton & Gelli had taken a 1-0 lead into the half-time interval following a 22nd minute strike from Steve Evans.

Ton Pentre had done enough during the first half to warrant an equaliser but the goalpost, some good saves from Ryan Betteney and resolute defending from Ton & Gelli denied the Bulldogs.

The second half was dominated by Ton Pentre and they netted an equaliser in the 56th minute when George Daly’s pass to Shane Brewer allowed the latter to cross into the box. Jaymie Wearn was on the prowl in and around the 6-yard box and his presence confused the defence and Brewer’s cross seemed to bounce straight into the back of the net.

Ton Pentre began to show the difference in class between the teams and three minutes later a free kick on the edge of the Ton & Gelli box allowed Shane Davies to beautifully glide the ball into the top lefthand corner of the goal for 2-1.

In the 62nd minute Wearn latched on to a mistake by the Ton & Gelli defence, who had played the ball out from the back. After winning possession of the ball, the Bulldogs striker had an open goal in front of him to make it 3-1 to Ton Pentre.

Ton Pentre’s fourth goal was exquisite. New signing Dan Richards skilfully sneaked through the Ton & Gelli defence before demonstrating composure as he slotted the ball over the goal line for 4-1.

With less than 10 minutes remaining, the Bulldogs looked comfortable but some sloppy defending saw Ton & Gelli score three goals in 6 minutes.

Leon Jacka made it 4-2 when he outran the Ton Pentre defence before placing the ball in the goal despite the best efforts of Neil Collins in the Bulldogs goal.

Jacka struck again after Collins was left high and dry by the Ton Pentre defence and with the score now 4-3, Ton & Gelli could sense an equaliser.

After the Bulldogs had given away a free kick out on their left wing, Jacka sent the ball to the near post where Jarrad Hill was allowed to head in for 4-4.

Following the match, Bulldogs manager Dean Morris said: “It was a good workout, both teams worked hard and to be fair to them they never gave in.

“For the neutral 4-4 was good and it was nice that the two teams got together for the first time in many years.”

Richard Taylor, Ton & Gelli manager, said: “I’m happy with our performance fitness wise. It was an entertaining match for the crowd.”
