Bottom of the table Aberbargoed Buds shocked Ton Pentre at Ynys Park in this Nathaniel Cars Welsh League Division One match as they brought to an end a fine run of form by the Bulldogs.
Ton Pentre came into this fixture with just one defeat in nine matches and were on the back of three consecutive victories. Meanwhile, the Buds were confident following a midweek 7-0 hammering of West End.
Aberbargoed took the lead in the 22nd minute when they counter attacked after a Ton Pentre move broke down deep inside the Buds half of the pitch. Winger Matthew Jones got himself on the end of the ball into the box and slotted it in for 1-0.
A powerful Leon Young effort early in the second half looked good enough to level matters but his shot appeared to have been stopped with a hand as Aberbargoed frantically defended deep inside their box. There were calls for a penalty from the players and the home crowd, however, the Referee allowed play to continue and the Buds cleared the ball to safety.
As the game ticked towards the hour mark, more pressure from the Bulldogs had Aberbargoed on the back foot in their penalty area when a corner found its way to Thomas Davies, who had been left unmarked on the penalty spot. He had time to cue his strike and with Asa Kirkwood beaten in goals, Davies disappointingly saw his strike crash back off the lefthand post.
From this scare, Aberbargoed quickly moved the ball up field through Jones and when he crossed into the box for Seb Haggett, the Buds striker made no mistake by applying a confident finish to make it 2-0.
Ton Pentre finally scored the goal that they deserved in the 72nd minute when Jaymie Wearn applied an exquisite finish from a tight angle to beat Kirkwood at his near post.
Unfortunately, the Bulldogs were unable to find the equalising goal that they desperately wanted and Aberbargoed Buds, despite already being relegated, were ecstatic with their victory at Ynys Park.
Ton Pentre are the first team in Division One to complete their fixtures and currently sit 9th with 38 points from 30 matches. Several of the teams around the Bulldogs have two or three matches left to play.
