Tata Steel 1-3 Ton Pentre
Nathaniel Cars Welsh League Division One
Wednesday, 16 April 2014
Ton Pentre had never beaten relegation threatened Tata Steel in a competitive fixture in five attempts before this game, but an excellent second half display of football saw the Bulldogs gain a comfortable victory with Dorian Sweet, Jaymie Wearn and Ross Fowler getting themselves on the score sheet.
It had been a pretty drab first half in this Nathaniel Cars Welsh League Division One fixture until the 39th minute when the home team came close to breaking the deadlock with a free kick on the edge of the box.
A direct strike looked as though it was about to reach the back of the net but Craig Rees got across his goal to save well by pushing to ball away to safety.
Five minutes later, Tata Steel came even closer when some great play up the right resulted in a cross into the box. The ball was met with a headed effort that went inches wide of Rees’ left hand post.
Ton Pentre went up a gear in the second half and quickly found themselves in the lead when Jaymie Wearn picked up possession out on the right. Having cut inside, Wearn threaded a through pass for Dorian Sweet as he approached the edge of the ‘D’. Sweet finished superbly by firing the ball high into the net leaving the Tata Steel goalkeeper with no chance of making the save.
A strike from distance shortly after nearly levelled the match for Tata Steel but Rees dived with an outstretched arm to make sure the ball went around the post for a corner kick.
Some excellent play in the 55th minute saw Andre Griffiths win the ball in midfield before setting Lewis Hydes free up the right wing. Hydes then progressed into the 18-yard box by beating a defender on the byline and subsequently crossed for Ross Fowler. The unmarked Bulldogs striker brought the ball under control and volleyed a shot against the crossbar.
The Bulldogs looked set to rue that missed chance when in the 78th minute Tata Steel broke through forcing Rees to come off his line to meet the striker. The Bulldogs goalkeeper was first to the ball on the edge of the box but he failed to make a proper connection with his attempt to head clear. The ball fell kindly for an attacker but remarkably the shot was sent wide of an open goal.
Ton Pentre got the second goal that they deserved two minutes later when Hydes gave the ball to Griffiths from a throw-in. With a simple defence splitting pass, Griffiths played Wearn goalside and the Bulldogs striker delightfully lobbed the ball over the Tata Steel goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
From the restart Ton Pentre were immediately on the attack again and Fowler scored what he thought was the third goal for the Bulldogs, however, his strike was ruled out for offiside.
His disappointment wasn’t to last long as in the 84th minute the striker found himself one-on-one with the Tata Steel goalkeeper. With a slight feint, the goalkeeper was committed to diving to his right and Fowler fired over him into the centre of the goal net for 3-0.
Tata Steel scored a consolation goal in the 85th minute when they breached the Ton Pentre defence but it was too little too late for the Port Talbot based club.
