Aberbargoed Buds v Ton PentreThis was a scrappy Welsh League Division One encounter but nonetheless entertaining and the real action began in the 11th minute when Aberbargoed Buds felt they should have been awarded a penalty kick.

Having advanced into Ton Pentre’s penalty area, an Aberbargoed player went to ground amid protest that he had been fouled. The Referee, Mr Wayne Tregonning, appeared to have a long think about the challenge and decided no offence had been committed. The home team had another chance to score when the ball broke kindly for them but Thomas Davies timed a precise sliding tackle inside the 18-yard box to remove the danger.

With 18 minutes played, Adam Raymond played a superb pass across field spreading the play to Dorian Sweet out on the right-hand side of the pitch. The Bulldogs striker skipped inside his marker and struck a powerful shot along the ground. The Aberbargoed goalkeeper got down low to his left to stop the ball for a good save.

Aberbargoed Buds forced a corner kick in the 35th minute that would prove to be very fruitful for the home team because when the ball was swung into the box, Dafydd Brewer was allowed to jump unchallenged. Making good connection on the ball, Brewer headed into the net for 1-0.

The lead lasted no longer than a minute, as straight from kick off some good build-up play saw Lewis Hydes link with Leon Young allowing the latter to cross the ball from the left to the far edge of the box where it was met by Sweet. From 18-yards, Sweet launched the ball into the top left-hand corner of the goal. It was an unstoppable effort that brought Ton Pentre level with their hosts.

At half-time Rameer Outlaw replaced an injured Ross Fowler in attack, who had done well during the first-half. The former Afan Lido forward looked sharp and dangerous as he caused the Aberbargoed defenders many problems throughout the second period.

Unfortunately, goal scorer Sweet was withdrawn from the match through injury on the hour and was replaced by Lloyd Toghill.

Following a 62nd minute corner, Aberbargoed blocked the ball’s first attempt to enter the danger zone but when it was immediately sent back in, the defence failed to react and Outlaw poked the ball over the line to put Ton Pentre into the lead.

The action was now being shared in each half of the pitch but the game was nearly put beyond all doubt in the 73rd minute when a corner kick was cleared out to Toghill, who was positioned on the edge of the D. Toghill shot and Young deflected the ball away from the goalkeeper but it was cleared off the line at the right-hand post.

With time running out for the home team, Aberbargoed applied pressure on the Bulldogs and the Buds had two appeals for a penalty turned down during added time in the second half.
