Ton Pentre 2-2 Goytre United
Welsh League Division One
Friday, 13th September 2013
Richard Ingram scored a marvelous goal in Ton Pentre’s 2-2 draw against Goytre United at Ynys Park with the Bulldogs midfielder striking the ball from 25-yards out, somehow sending it over Goyts goalkeeper Luke Martin who was stood on his line. It was quite simply a special goal.
This was an extremely entertaining end-to-end match with a multitude of goal scoring chances for both teams.
Ton Pentre played some lovely football in the first-half, vastly improving upon the previous week’s performance in the League Cup, and there were plenty of good displays from the players all over the pitch.
Goytre United have vastly improved their squad for the current Welsh League campaign and also played some attractive football against the Bulldogs.
One of Ton Pentre’s best chances in the first-half came as a result of George Daly winning the ball deep inside the Goytre United half of the pitch before flicking a through ball into Lewis Hydes‘ run. The winger cut into the box and passed the ball to Ross Fowler. The Bulldogs striker took a left foot shot that went wide of the right post. It was a wonderful passage of play.
Within two minutes of the game restarting following half-time, Goytre United found themselves a goal up when the referee awarded the visitors a penalty following a handball in the box. Neil Collins was sent the wrong way with the spot kick and the Goyts took a 0-1 lead.
Moments later Goytre United were reduced to ten-men when one of their midfielder’s received a second yellow card for an off the ball incident. From the resulting free kick, several yards out from the penalty area, the Bulldogs came close but the shot was off target.
As the match entered the 54th minute, Ton Pentre were applying more pressure on the Goytre United defence and with the ball at his feet, Richard Ingram unleashed a stunning shot that was perfectly hit dropping in over Luke Martin. Remarkably, the Goytre goalkeeper was stood underneath his crossbar on the goal line. Ingram’s goal has probably already won the ‘Goal of the Season‘ award for his astonishing effort.
Ingram was involved again shortly after when he linked-up with Craig Rees to send a cross into the box where Fowler came incredibly close with a diving header. It was sublime build-up play that deserved to see the ball hit the back of the net.
Somewhat against the run of play, with the Bulldogs enjoying their one man advantage, Goytre United were awarded a debatable free kick on the edge of the Ton Pentre box. The set-piece was wonderfully converted with Collins‘ dive unable to prevent the ball from rippling the net and Goytre regaining the lead.
Goytre United were looking to defend their lead and put everyone behind the ball to block Ton Pentre’s advances towards their goal.
The Bulldogs eventually began to open up channels deep inside the Goyts half of the pitch and in the 76th minute Ingram and Hydes combined to supply Fowler with a cross once again. Fowler made good connection with the ball but his header went over the bar.
More pressure on the Goytre United defence in the 83rd minute resulted in the Bulldogs being awarded a penalty for handball. Following many protests from the visiting players, Fowler eventually placed the ball on the spot to make it two goals in two games since his return to Ynys Park from Aberbargoed Buds, drawing the Bulldogs level once more.
In the last five minutes of the match both Ton Pentre and Goytre United had chances to win the game with shots being blocked and cleared off their goal lines.
This 2-2 draw had been a wonderful advert for Welsh League football with Ton Pentre and Goytre United contributing to an exciting spectacle.
