Ton Pentre slumped to a home defeat against Cynon Valley outfit Aberdare Town under the floodlights at Ynys Park, despite creating enough chances to win the game. The visitors were victorious in this MacWhirter Welsh League Division One match with a last minute goal courtesy of Lewis Hitchcock.
It was no surprise when Ton Pentre took a deserved lead in the 32nd minute of the match when they demonstrated this slick style with a remarkable team goal.
Having maintained possession, the ball was passed across the defensive line to the left wing before being played infield to Andre Griffiths. The Ton Pentre midfielder spread the ball out to the right wing allowing Richard Ingram to progress down the flank before whipping an accurate cross to the far post, where it was met with a Nickie Jones header to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
Aberdare Town showed some real character in the second-half and they unsettled the Bulldogs preventing them from finding any kind of composure on the ball. As a result, the equaliser seemed inevitable and after beating the offside trap in the 54th minute, Sam Danby chipped the ball over the advancing Neil Collins with it going into the net off the left post.
Four minutes later Ton Pentre should have regained the lead when Griffiths sent Jaymie Wearn through on goal, who sneaked in behind a defender to open up ample space to release a shot. It appeared that the Bulldogs striker had placed his effort well as it curled towards the goal, but the ball went wide of the right post releasing gasps from the onlookers at Ynys Park.
Aberdare were handed a superb chance to take the lead themselves in the 63rd minute when Ross Porter was judged to have committed a foul in the box resulting in the referee awarding a penalty.
Former Bulldogs player Phil Clarke stepped up to take the penalty and booted his spot kick to the left. Ton Pentre goalkeeper Collins dived the correct way and pulled off a fine save to deny Clarke and keep the scores level.
From here the Bulldogs would have thought the tide was turning once more in this match, however, Aberdare sneaked through the Ton Pentre defence in the last minute and despite Collins’ efforts to narrow the angle on an attacker, the ball was squared to Hitchcock who netted easily making it 2-1 to the visitors.
Deep into injury time, Ton Pentre looked certain to score with a headed effort after applying some considerable pressure, however, just as the ball appeared to be going in, Tom Bradley pulled of a stunning save to ensure victory for his club.
Dean Morris, and his management team, will be bitterly disappointed with this defeat and only have a short amount of time to eradicate Ton Pentre’s frailties ahead of Haverfordwest County’s visit to Ynys Park on Saturday, 24th August 2013 at 2.30pm.
Ton Pentre will then play Aberdare Town away on Wednesday, 28th August at 7.30pm, when they will look to avenge this 2-1 defeat.
