Ton Pentre 1-1 Afan Lido
Pre-season Friendly Match
Saturday, 27th July 2013
Ton Pentre registered a good performance in their pre-season friendly against Corbett Sports Welsh Premier League outfit Afan Lido at their Ynys Park home.
The Bulldogs started the game in the ascendency and could have found themselves in the lead after 10 minutes when Lewis Hydes ran with the ball up the left wing before passing inside to striker John Edwards. In turn, Edwards laid the ball off for Dorian Sweet whose snapshot was powerful but saved by the Afan Lido goalkeeper.
Three minutes later Ton Pentre were awarded a free kick on the left, deep inside the Afan Lido half of the pitch. As the ball was lifted into the box, Sweet was bundled over after having his shirt pulled. The assistant referee, who was close to the incident, signalled to the referee that a penalty should be awarded.
Sweet took ownership of the ball, placed it on the spot and confidently struck it into the net making it 1-0 to the Bulldogs.
Sweet nearly scored a second in the 27th minute after Hydes crossed the ball into the box for the striker. Sweet shaped his body well in order to release a powerful header but his effort, although having the keeper beaten, went painstakingly wide of the left post.
Afan Lido had failed to get any significant foothold in the match during the first-half, however, they enjoyed a little more success during the second and levelled with the Bulldogs during the 62nd minute. The visitors scored with a close range strike that goalkeeper Neil Collins got a hand to but was unable to prevent it from entering his goal.
The Welsh Premier League club should have put themselves into the lead in the 77th minute when they were awarded a penalty following a foul in the box. The penalty was hit well but somehow Collins pulled off an amazing save that looked impossible to achieve. The Bulldogs goalkeeper was diving away from the ball but he pushed it over the bar with his outstretched right hand.
Afan Lido had another chance five minutes from time when a wayward pass allowed Afan Lido clean through on goal. Collins was quick to advance from his line to narrow the angle and his quick actions forced the shot wide of the goal.
Ton Pentre had the last chance of the game to score a winning goal when Andre Griffiths skilfully brought the ball forward to the edge of the box where he passed to Richard Ingram. The Bulldogs midfielder turned on the ball and hit a useful shot, which fizzed wide of the right-hand post.
Ton Pentre’s pre-season schedule continues against Penydarren BC on Tuesday, 30th July. The game is being played in Troedyrhiw and kicks off at 6.45pm. The Bulldogs then travel to Llantwit Fardre on Saturday, 3rd August at 2.30pm.
