Radstock Town 1-3 Ton Pentre
Saturday, 20th July 2013
Ton Pentre ran out 3-1 winners in Somerset as they beat Western League Premier Division club Radstock Town, with striker Jaymie Wearn scoring a hat-trick in a promising pre-season performance.
Bulldogs manager Dean Morris, has been working hard over the close season to assemble the squad that he had on show at Radstock Town, and his players did not disappoint as Ton Pentre looked fit and the new and established players appeared to gel well.
From kick-off Ton Pentre looked comfortable but it wasn’t until the 18th minute that they got the breakthrough, when a Richard Ingram’s free kick saw the ball handled in the box by a Radstock player.
A penalty was awarded and Jaymie Wearn slotted the ball into the back of the net, having sent the Radstock goalkeeper the wrong way.
It should have been 2-0 in the 36th minute when Wearn found the back of the net again, however, his goal was ruled out after the assistant referee flagged for offside. It was a harsh decision as Wearn was onside throughout the movement of play but the assistant had spotted John Edwards in an offside position but the striker was not interfering with play.
From the resulting free-kick Radstock moved the ball out to the left where it was crossed into the box. Via an unchallenged header, leaving Ton goalkeeper Neil Collins with little chance of making a save, the home team leveled the scores.
Ton Pentre bossed the second-half play and nearly found themselves back in the lead during the 50th minute when Leon Jacka broke free of the Radstock defence. With only the goalkeeper to beat, the Bulldogs midfielder sent his shot wide of the post, which visibly frustrated the player.
Moments later Jacka was involved again when he sent a lovely curled cross into the box from the left that expertly found its way onto Wearn’s head. The Ton Pentre striker connected well with the ball but his header went just over the crossbar.
In the 61st minute Ross Porter strode forward from defence with the ball and on the edge of the box he laid it off to Wearn. With some trickery, Wearn presented himself with a chance and having shot across goal he neatly placed the ball inside the far post making it 2-1 to the Bulldogs.
A minute later Thomas Davies steamed forward from his defensive position to steal the ball from an opponent before launching a 25-yard shot at goal. Davies had made superb connection with the ball and his strike looked to have the goalkeeper beaten as it dipped, however, the Bulldogs player was denied an exceptional goal with an excellent save as his effort was tipped over the crossbar.
Seven minutes from full-time, Ton Pentre scored a third through Wearn, who completed his hat-trick with a delightful chip over the goalkeeper for 3-1.
It could have got worse for Radstock just before full-time when Jacka was brought down in the box when one-on-one with the goalkeeper. The former Ton & Gelli BC midfielder took the spot kick but was denied by a good dive and save.
This was certainly a useful workout for Dean Morris’ team who can expect tougher tests against Merthyr Town on Thursday, 25th July (KO 7.30pm) and Afan Lido on Saturday, 27th July (KO 2.30pm). Both of these pre-season friendly games will be at Ynys Park, Ton Pentre.
