Ton Pentre suffered more disappointment as they slumped to their second home defeat in consecutive matches.

Following their defeat to Aberdare Town, the Bulldogs were hopeful of turning in an improved performance against Bryntirion Athletic, however, it wasn’t to be as the young visitors bided their time to strike twice and win the match.

Ton Pentre started the game by creating several early chances. From a second minute effort the Bulldogs earned a corner kick. When the ball was crossed into the box, Thomas Davies headed it against Wyn Walters post.

As the game continued, the young Bryntirion outfit grew in confidence and on the half hour only some good defending from Ross Porter prevented the visitors from having a clear shot on target after they split the defence.

In the 38th minute Bryntirion had better luck in breaching the Ton defence and when the ball was placed in the back of the net their players and management staff were euphoric.

Inside the first ten minutes of the second half, Bryntirion applied some considerable pressure on the Bulldogs from a series of corner kicks. One effort was headed on target but the ball deflected off a defender for another corner.

A pinpoint delivery of the ball into the penalty area looked to have provided Bryntirion with the perfect opportunity to increase their lead but the visitors were denied by Richard Ingram’s headed clearance off the goal line.

Tom McCarthy utilised his pace up the right in the 66th minute to get in behind the Bryntirion defence. McCarthy spotted his strike partner Chris Colvin making a clear run in support and squared the ball across the six yard box. Colvin stretched his leg to make a connection but missed by a matter of centimetres.

Shortly after Dean Morris changed the personnel on the pitch to bring in Josh Evans, Ross Fowler and Richard Noyes. The substitutions freshened things up but just as the Bulldogs began to look likely for an equaliser as they ploughed forward in numbers, Bryntirion took full advantage of Ton’s high defensive line hitting them on a counter-attack.

As Bryntirion passed the ball around with style, they were able to outnumber the Ton Pentre defence and score with the ball going into the goal off Jonathan Howe’s right post making it 2-0.

Ton did have chances to haul themselves back into the game before the final whistle when in the 84th minute Colvin picked up possession before checking back and teeing up a shot for Porter, but despite the defender hitting a good strike from distance he had to watch his effort inch wide of the post.

Moments later Evans had an opportunity to shoot from outside the box and when the ball took an awkward deflection off a defender, Walters produced a magical save to deny a goal from being scored.

Ton Pentre will now need to stay positive, regroup and get themselves prepared for their next match, a Rhondda derby against AFC Porth at their Dinas Park ground on Saturday, 1st September 2012 at 2.30pm.

Ton Pentre:
1. Jonathan Howe, 2. Jason Brewer (69’), 3. Ross Porter, 4. Adam Lewis (Captain), 5. Lewis Hydes, 6. Thomas Davies, 7. Shane Brewer, 8. Richard Ingram (67’), 9. Leon Young, 10. Tom McCarthy (67’), 11. Chris Colvin.
12. Ross Fowler (67’), 14. Fraser Williams, 15. Nyran Bird, 16. Josh Evans (67’), 17. Richard Noyes (69’).

  1. An unfortunate defeat. With a week until the next game, hopefully we will return refreshed and ready to take on AFC Porth. It’ll all come right again… We have full confidence in the Bulldogs!
