Pontardawe Town 5-0 Ton Pentre l Welsh League Division One
Tuesday, 24th April 2012 l Recreation Ground
The Bulldogs suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Pontardawe Town in their penultimate match of the Welsh League Division One season.
The playing surface was waterlogged and it was a credit to both teams that they attempted to play football in such terrible conditions. However, as early play highlighted, there was randomness to the match leaving each movement of play unpredictable.
As they were the home team, Pontardawe predictably settled into the conditions quicker than Ton Pentre and saw an early effort cleared off the line by Bulldogs defender Nyran Bird.
Ton Pentre were unsettled as the early kick off prevented the Bulldogs from undertaking a comprehensive and effective pre-match warm-up. The Bulldogs were also forced to start the match with two players carrying injuries.
Leon Young was one player carrying an injury and due to his hamstring strain it prevented him from stopping an advance down his right wing. This allowed Pontardawe to apply pressure to the Ton Pentre defence and it resulted in Daniel Lancey putting the ball beyond Jonathan Howe to give the home team the lead.
Following the goal the Bulldogs were able to replace their injured players with brothers Shane and Jason Brewer, who had been prevented from making the starting line-up due to the early start.
As the first-half progressed Ton Pentre played their way into contention and despite the sticky surface they were passing the ball around well.
Thomas Davies had one of Ton’s best attempts on goal when he tried his luck from 30-yards. It was a useful effort but his shot skirted the outside of the right-hand post.
Just 45 seconds into the second half the Bulldogs suffered a big blow when they conceded a second goal after Luke Borelli fired in to give Pontardawe some breathing space.
Minutes later some good build-up play saw Josh Evans set-up Richard Ingram with chance to shoot. The Ton midfielder came close but the effort unfortunately fizzed wide of the right post.
Pontardawe practically killed the game off in the 71st minute as Borelli turned provider when he crossed into the near post where Scott McCoubrey finished well to make it 3-0.
Moments later Thomas Davies nearly pulled a goal back with a header from a corner kick that was won following some sustained pressure. As the ball was crossed to him, he glanced a header goalwards but it was off target.
In the final ten minutes of the match both Borelli and McCoubrey bagged a brace to round off a superb win for the home team as the Bulldogs pushed everyone forward.
Ton Pentre will look to bounce back in their final match of the season against relegated Cardiff Corinthians at Ynys Park on Saturday, 28th April 2012. Kick off is at 2.30pm.
