Ton Pentre gained a vital win as the Bulldogs came from behind against Taffs Well at Ynys Park. Leon Young and Ross Fowler grabbed the goals for the home team in a difficult match.

Taffs Well consistently looked dangerous when going forward and were presented with an excellent chance to take the lead after the Bulldogs conceded a free kick on the edge of their box in the 14th minute of the match. From the kick, Ton Pentre goalkeeper Jonathan Howe pulled off a great save as he hurled himself through the air to push the ball away to his left.

The Bulldogs were resolute in defence but were unable to stop a 29th minute corner kick from ending up in the back of their goal. It was a well worked ball from the corner that eventually saw Scott Hillman strike Taffs Well into the lead.Within six minutes the Bulldogs were level from a corner kick of their own. Standing inside the penalty area, the Ton Pentre midfielder was provided with a useful opportunity as the ball landed at his feet. He struck well and despite the best efforts of a defender on the line, Young had found the equalising goal.

At the start of the second half the Bulldogs were in the ascendency and they took full advantage of being in charge of the match during the 50th minute of play.

When Shane Brewer brought the ball forward up the right wing, he picked out Ross Fowler on the edge of the 18-yard box with a pinpoint cross. Fowler, who had been without a goal since 11th November, brought the ball down, turned, and unleashed a firecracker of a shot into the top left-hand corner of the goal. It was a stunning strike.

Moments later Ton Pentre found themselves 3-1 up after Leon Young was tripped in the box resulting in the referee awarding the Bulldogs a penalty.

Confident from his wonder strike, Fowler stepped up to take the spot kick and despite the goalkeeper guessing the right way, the striker applied power and accuracy to ensure it found its way over the goal line.

For the rest of the game the Bulldogs were put under pressure by their visitors and in the 66th minute Taffs Well pulled a goal back after Howe saw the ball slip out of his hands and into the path of an attacker.

The home crowd were getting nervy as Taffs Well continued to apply pressure on Ton. The Bulldogs were desperate for a win instead of a 16th league draw and looked determined to hold onto their lead.

This determination was exemplified in Ross Porter’s attitude when a Taffs Well striker was set free on goal. Porter chased down the attacker and executed a sublime sliding tackle deep inside the Ton box to divert the ball away from immediate danger.

Scorers: Young and Fowler scored the goals for the Bulldogs victory.

With just five minutes of the match remaining Taffs Well had another opportunity to equalise but the ball was sent inches wide of the Howe’s left-hand post.
