Ton Pentre 3-1 Cardiff Corinthians l Welsh League Division One
Saturday, 28th April 2012 l Ynys Park
Match Ball Sponsor l Richard Bebb from Portmahomack, Scotland

Ton Pentre finished their season off in style at Ynys Park where the Rhondda Bulldogs scored some stunning goals to earn victory against Cardiff Corinthians.

The Corries came into the match knowing that they were relegated after midweek results failed to go their way. Nevertheless, the Radyr based club came to the Rhondda with a fighting spirit and attempted to make life as difficult as possible for Ton Pentre.

The Bulldogs enjoyed the most possession in the opening 15 minutes but the visitors did enough to keep them at bay with Chris Colvin, Richard Jago and Ross Fowler all frustrated by pressure from the defence forcing them to send their efforts wide of the post.

Threat: Chris Colvin goes on the attack.

With 24 minutes played, some excellent build-up play from Cardiff Corries led to their first significant chance on goal. Luke Lear beat both the defence and goalkeeper Jonathan Howe but was denied when his close range shot rebounded off the bottom of the left-hand post before going out of play.

Ten minutes later Lear had another chance, this time with a header, and the Bulldogs managed to clear the effort off the line the keep the score level.

Ton Pentre broke the deadlock two minutes before half-time after Cardiff Corries had been awarded a free kick on the edge of the Bulldogs 18-yard box. The play from the free kick was poor and the ball was blocked by the wall before being cleared up field.

Wonder Goal: Richard Ingram scored a 30-yard effort that puts him in contention for goal of the season.

The ball reached Richard Ingram who delightfully chipped it on for Fowler to rise and with a glancing header put it beyond the advancing goalkeeper making it 1-0.Within moments of the second half, Corries’ Andy Smith had an opportunity to shoot from close range but the attempt was more than equalled by Jonathan Howe who clutched the ball into his possession.

The Bulldogs doubled their lead in the 53rd minute when from a Shane Brewer free kick, Chris Colvin turned the ball past Phil Smith to give Ton some breathing space at 2-0.

Just three minutes later it was 3-0 when Richard Ingram shot from 30-yards with a wonder strike that was impossible to save. The effort was calculated and with it, Ingram will be in contention for goal of the season.

Debut: Dean Morris gave debuts to Tim Lane and Rob Dowling (pictured).

Shane Brewer nearly scored a fourth in the 83rd minute when his shot from the corner of the 18-yard box crashed against the cross bar, however, it was Cardiff Corries who had the last say in the match when Dean Maynard’s 90th minute shot hit the underneath of the bar before finding its way into the back of the net for 3-1.

A club spokesperson said: “We would like to thank the players and management staff for consolidating the club’s place in Welsh League Division One. We have only lost five league matches in two seasons, which is a remarkable achievement and one that highlights what this team could be capable of.

“We would also like to express our gratitude to our sponsors and supporters as all of their help, assistance and enthusiasm is greatly appreciated.”

MacWhirter Welsh League Division One
Saturday, 28th April 2012
Kick-off: 2.30pm

Full-time:

Ton Pentre 3-1 Cardiff Corinthians

Match Ball Sponsor l Richard Bebb from Portmahomack, Scotland

Ton Pentre will welcome Cardiff Corinthians to Ynys Park for their last game of the MacWhirter Welsh League Division One season. The Bulldogs go into the match hopeful that their squad will be bolstered by the return of Leon Young, Owen Davies and Chris Colvin.

The Rhondda outfit suffered a heavy midweek defeat against Pontardawe Town with a stretched squad. Matters were made worse when Leon Young was forced out of the game inside the opening 15 minutes with a hamstring strain. Owen Davies had to sit the match out through injury and Chris Colvin was unavailable for selection.

Dean Morris is hopeful that all three will be available to him for Cardiff Corinthians’ visit on Saturday, 28th April. Morris will certainly be without suspended duo Geza Hajgato and Adam Lewis, who are both suspended.

The Corries will be playing for pride after the Radyr based club suffered relegation in midweek following Aberaman Athletic’s emphatic 6-3 away win at West End.

Ton Pentre v Cardiff Corinthians kicks off at 2.30pm and updates will be available here on tonpentreafc.com, Twitter and Facebook.

Finally, the Bulldogs would like to thank Match Ball Sponsor, Richard Bebb from Portmahomack, Rosshire in Scotland. Richard’s support is greatly appreciated by all at Ynys Park.
